Manchester

Manchester is one of the biggest cities in the northwest of England. It is a lively city with a history. Every year Manchester is getting more and more popular with tourists. Not only is it home to one of the most famous football teams in the world but it is also one of the biggest student towns in Europe. I want you to discover this city before everybody else does.

Your Task

You are working for a travel agent who specialises on trips to England. As more and more people want to visit Manchester your employer wants you to know more about this city. He has decided to send you and your colleagues there for a weekend so that you can advise customers later. Before you visit the city, you have decided to gather some information from the net.

Procedure

In order to explore the city I would like you to browse through the links at the bottom of this page. This way you can find out how to get there, where to sleep, and most importantly, what to do and visit.

First: Try and answer the questions below as you browse through the pages.

Second: After having found the answers you work together with a group and you decide what you want to do and see when in Manchester.

Now answer the following questions as you browse through the pages:

1.    From which 3 Swiss cities can you get direct flights to Manchester and can you name some of the airlines?

2.    How frequent are the buses from Manchester Airport to the city centre? Can you go to Liverpool, The Lake District and London from Manchester                     Airport?

3.    Which train station is nearest to the Manchester Youth Hostel?

4.    How many bedrooms does the Lowry Hotel offer?

5.    On of the ‘Short breaks’ you can have in Manchester is for D:Percussion. What is D:Percussion? How much is the entry fee? And for how many years             has it been held?

6.    If you are hungry you can go to ‘The Curry Mile’. What is so special about the curry mile and what kind of food can you get there?

7.    Which places does the Manchester City Council suggest you to see as a visitor?

8.    Which of these places would you like to visit most and why?

9.    What’s the short form of Manchester United?

10.    Can you name some footballers playing for Manchester United?

11.    Is it possible to visit the stadium? How much is the entry fee?

12.    Which position does Rooney play?

After you've answered these questions, think about what you would like to do most during your weekend in Manchester. (maybe take a few notes)

Now: In your groups decide what you are going to visit. How would this be of use to your future customers in the travel agency?
